Why Speech, Language, and Literacy Instruction is Essential
The early years are a critical time for cognitive and language development, as this is when neural pathways are being formed in a child’s brain.
“These language pathways eventually support the development of literacy,” Jayna says. “Research has shown that early language abilities are a strong predictor of overall academic success, so when a child has difficulty understanding and producing speech and language, we want to intervene as soon as possible.”
Dragonfly recognizes that all children learn differently, so we use a variety of multi-modal approaches to therapy, giving children opportunities to learn new concepts in multiple ways. We have specialized training from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) in the Orton-Gillingham methodology (a Structured Literacy approach to reading), Phonological Awareness, and Pre-K Literacy. We use award-winning speech, language, and mental imagery programs from Lindamood-Bell, including LiPS®, Talkies®, and Visualizing and Verbalizing®. We also love Social Thinking® and The Zones of Regulation® for students who have social communication challenges.
